- Set offset stakes at 25–50 ft intervals, parallel to the alignment and at a safe distance from the trench edge (typically 5–8 ft).
- Mark each offset stake with station, offset distance and direction, and design pipe top elevation or cover depth at that station.
Setting Trench Bottom Elevation
The trench bottom elevation is: top of pipe elevation − outside pipe diameter − bedding thickness. For a 6-inch water main with 60-inch cover requirement and 6 inches of bedding:
Trench bottom = top of pipe − pipe OD − 6 in bedding
Example: Ground = 108.50, cover = 4.00 ft, pipe OD = 0.63 ft, bedding = 0.50 ft
Top of pipe: 108.50 − 4.00 = 104.50 ft
Trench bottom: 104.50 − 0.63 − 0.50 = 103.37 ft
Pressure Testing Documentation
After installation and before service connection, water mains require hydrostatic pressure testing (typically 150% of operating pressure for 2 hours) and, for potable water mains, bacteriological testing. Documentation requirements:
- Date and time of test start and completion
- Test section (from valve to valve or station to station)
- Test pressure and duration
- Initial and final pressure readings
- Water added during test (for leakage rate calculation)
