Utility trench backfill must be placed in 8-inch maximum loose lifts and compacted to 90–95% modified Proctor (ASTM D1557). Never compact mechanically within 12 inches of the pipe crown — hand-tamp or use a jumping jack in the haunch zone. Test density at minimum every 100–200 linear feet per lift; stagger test locations between lifts.
Why Trench Backfill Compaction Matters
Poorly compacted trench backfill settles under traffic, creating road surface depressions that eventually become sinkholes. For flexible pipe (PVC, HDPE), inadequate haunch support causes pipe deflection and eventual cracking. Municipal sewer and water main specs require compaction records for every lift because agencies know from experience that uncompacted trenches create maintenance problems for decades.

Compaction Testing Requirements
Nuclear density gauge testing (ASTM D6938) is the standard. Each test record must include: test number, date, location (station and offset), lift number, material and Proctor reference, wet density, moisture, dry density, percent compaction vs. required, pass/fail, gauge ID, and technician name. Log all tests in Gradelog to track coverage against required frequency.
Handling Failed Tests
- Identify the cause: too-dry soil, insufficient passes, wrong lift thickness, or unsuitable material.
- Correct and re-compact.
- Retest in the same location (within 2 ft).
- Log both failure and passing retest in Gradelog, linked together. The as-built compaction report must show the failure, corrective action, and passing retest.
