To grade a drainage swale, set stakes at 25-ft intervals along the channel centerline with cut/fill from design flowline elevation. After grading, verify the as-built flowline drains continuously to the outlet with no reverse grade (a flat or rising point that would pond water). Verify outlet invert elevation first — a wrong outlet elevation invalidates all upstream stakes.
Why Drainage Grading Precision Matters
A swale with incorrect grade ponds water (flat spots or reverse grade) or erodes (steep unlined channels). Ponded water at the wrong location is a drainage liability on roadways, athletic fields, and commercial sites. Erosion in unlined channels undermines adjacent infrastructure. Getting the grade right is both a performance and durability requirement.
Step 1: Verify the Outlet Invert
Before staking anything, field-verify the as-built elevation of the outlet structure invert. If the outlet is already installed and is off design by more than the tolerance, resolve it before staking — any upstream grading done based on the wrong outlet elevation is wrong. The outlet controls everything.
Step 2: Pre-Compute Target Rod Readings
Flowline at outlet (STA 0+00): 100.00 ft → target rod = 6.80 ft
STA 0+25 (0.50% slope): 100.13 ft → target rod = 6.67 ft
STA 0+50: 100.25 ft → target rod = 6.55 ft
Step 3: Set Stakes at 25-ft Intervals
Drive a stake at every 25-ft station along the channel centerline. For each stake, take a ground elevation reading, calculate the cut/fill from existing grade to the design flowline, and mark the lath. On narrow V-ditches, also set stakes on both sides at the top of the ditch to guide the operator.
Step 4: Grade and Verify
After rough grading, walk the channel with a level and rod to verify:
- Flowline at each station is within ±0.10 ft of design (or tighter, per spec).
- No reverse grade segments anywhere along the channel.
- Side slopes match the design cross-section.
- Channel connects continuously to inlet and outlet structures at correct elevation.
