Pipe grade is calculated as: Grade % = (Elevation Difference ÷ Pipe Run) × 100. For a 200-ft run dropping 1.00 ft, grade = (1.00 ÷ 200) × 100 = 0.50%. To set pipe grade, pre-compute the design invert at each joint — Invert at distance d = upstream invert − (grade × d) — then verify with a pipe laser or differential leveling to within ±0.05 ft of design.
Why Pipe Grade Is Critical
Gravity sewer and storm drain systems rely entirely on slope. The self-cleaning minimum for sanitary sewer is approximately 2 feet per second. Below that threshold, grease solidifies, grit settles, and solids accumulate. Most municipal specs set minimum slopes that produce 2 fps at design flow: 0.40–0.50% for 8-inch pipe, 0.28% for 10-inch, 0.22% for 12-inch. The IPC requires 1/4 in/ft (2.08%) for 4-inch residential drain lines.
The Pipe Grade Formula
Fall (ft) = Run × (Grade % ÷ 100)
Example — 8-inch sewer, 200-ft run:
Upstream MH invert: 104.50 ft | Downstream: 103.50 ft
Fall: 1.00 ft | Grade: (1.00 ÷ 200) × 100 = 0.50%

Invert Elevations at Intermediate Stations
At 50 ft: 104.50 − (0.005 × 50) = 104.25 ft
At 100 ft: 104.50 − (0.005 × 100) = 104.00 ft
At 150 ft: 104.50 − (0.005 × 150) = 103.75 ft
Pre-compute these and write them in your field book before going to the trench.
Setting Grade with a Pipe Laser
- Set the grade on the laser. Dial in the design grade percentage on the laser control panel (Topcon TP-L6GV, Spectra DG813). Confirm the display matches the plans before mounting.
- Calculate and set the mounting height. Mounting height = (design invert − manhole bottom elevation) + pipe radius. This puts the beam at the pipe centerline elevation.
- Align horizontally. The beam must point directly down the pipe centerline. Use a plumb line or total station on runs over 100 ft.
- Set each joint to the beam. Place the laser target in the bell end. Adjust the pipe until the target LED shows beam at center.
- Verify at every joint or every 25 ft.
Setting Grade with a Level and Rod
HI = 107.42 ft | Design invert at STA 125 ft: 104.13 ft
Target: 107.42 − 104.13 = 3.29 ft
Actual rod on invert: 3.41 ft → Actual invert: 107.42 − 3.41 = 104.01 ft
Deviation: −0.12 ft (LOW — adjust before backfill)
