Why Minimum Slope Is a Code Requirement
Gravity drainage depends on maintaining flow velocity above the self-cleaning threshold (approximately 2 fps for sanitary sewer). Below that, grease, grit, and solids accumulate, leading to progressive blockage, overflows, and emergency service calls. Minimum slope requirements are the code’s mechanism for ensuring adequate velocity at design flow conditions. Going below minimum slope is a code violation and a contractor liability issue.

Fall = 250 × 0.0050 = 1.25 ft minimum drop
Upstream invert = 98.40 ft

Field Verification Before Backfill
- Measure as-built invert elevations at both manholes with a level and rod or total station.
- Calculate as-built slope: (upstream − downstream) ÷ horizontal run × 100.
- Confirm as-built slope meets minimum code AND design slope.
