Gas pipeline cover depth requirements: 24 inches minimum under normal conditions; 36 inches under roadways and streams; 18 inches for low-pressure service lines in residential areas (ASME B31.8 and 49 CFR Part 192). Marker posts are required at above-ground locations (road crossings, fence lines) and at specified intervals along the alignment. Cathodic protection anodes (sacrificial magnesium or impressed current) must be installed per the design; document anode locations precisely for future maintenance.
Federal and ASME Requirements
Natural gas pipelines are regulated by 49 CFR Part 192 (PHMSA) for interstate and intrastate pipelines. Key cover depth requirements:

Grade Control for Gas Pipeline
Gas pipelines do not require gravity flow, so the grade is less critical than for sewer. However, consistent grade is still required to:
- Maintain minimum cover depth along the entire alignment
- Avoid high points that can trap gas/condensate (for wet gas systems)
- Match the elevation at valve stations, regulators, and tie-in points
Set grade stakes at 25–50 ft intervals targeting the design pipe top elevation. Verify pipe top elevation (not pipe invert, which is less commonly specified for gas) at each stake location before backfill.
Cathodic Protection
Steel pipe in the ground corrodes electrochemically. Cathodic protection (CP) systems protect the pipe by making it the cathode in an electrochemical cell. Two types:
- Sacrificial anode systems: Magnesium or zinc anodes are connected to the pipe and buried nearby. The anode corrodes instead of the pipe. Document each anode location with GPS coordinates and depth so future owners can test the system.
- Impressed current systems: A rectifier drives current through the pipe to counteract corrosion. Required for longer pipelines and high-resistivity soils.
Anode installation and CP system performance must be documented during construction. The pipeline owner will commission a CP survey after construction; missing anode location records create long-term maintenance problems.
Marker Posts and Warning Tape
APWA yellow warning tape is placed 12 inches above the pipe during backfill. Marker posts are required at: road crossings, railroad crossings, fence crossings, and at 1/4-mile intervals in open country. Document marker post locations in Gradelog with GPS coordinates for the record.
