A digital level (Leica DNA03, Topcon DL-501, Trimble DiNi) reads a bar-coded rod automatically with 0.1–0.3mm precision — 3–5x more precise than manual rod reading and eliminates transcription errors. For most contractor grade work, an automatic optical level is sufficient. Digital levels are used when submitting precision elevation data to DOT or when hundreds of elevation shots need to be recorded and downloaded without re-entry.
How Digital Leveling Works
Instead of a human reading the rod graduation, a digital level uses an electronic sensor to read a bar-code pattern on the matching rod. The display shows the rod height in 1–3 seconds. Measurements store directly in the instrument’s memory and can be downloaded as a CSV for direct import into a spreadsheet or Gradelog without manual re-entry.
When to Use a Digital Level
- DOT and airport grade certification: Tight tolerances (±0.01–0.05 ft) require the precision and documented record digital leveling provides.
- Large elevation grids: On projects requiring hundreds of elevation shots (parking structures, athletic fields, runways), digital recording saves significant time.
- Benchmark establishment: Setting or verifying control benchmarks for large projects.
- Normal contractor grade work: An automatic optical level is usually sufficient and less expensive.
Setup and Operation
- Mount the instrument on a stable tripod. Level with foot screws. The internal compensator handles fine-leveling.
- Set the job parameters on the display: benchmark elevation, job name, tolerance.
- Hold the bar-coded rod vertical (same technique as a standard rod — use a rod bubble or wave).
- Press Measure. The display shows rod height in 1–3 seconds. Review and accept.
- Download at end of day via USB or SD card in CSV format.

Limitations
- Requires the manufacturer’s bar-coded rod — cannot read standard fiberglass or Philadelphia rods.
- Very bright direct sunlight on the rod face can cause reading failures. Shade the rod when needed.
- Maximum digital reading range is ~80–110m — beyond that, use manual optical mode.
