A grade rod is read in decimal feet, not feet-and-inches. Large red numbers mark whole feet; black graduation marks indicate tenths and hundredths. A reading of 4.67 means 4 feet, 6 tenths, 7 hundredths — approximately 4 feet 8 inches. Accurate rod reading is the foundation of every elevation check on a job site.
Why Rod Reading Errors Are So Costly
A 0.10-foot error in a backsight reading propagates through every elevation you calculate from that setup. If your benchmark backsight is wrong by 0.10 ft, your Height of Instrument (HI) is wrong by the same amount, and every grade check for the day is off. On a sewer project, a 0.10-ft HI error means every invert elevation is wrong — enough to flip a grade check from pass to fail. Experienced crews read the rod twice before recording on critical shots.
Rod Types Used on Construction Sites
Philadelphia Rod
The most common US surveying rod. Graduated in feet, tenths, and hundredths. Alternating black and white bands at each 0.10-foot interval; red numerals mark whole feet and half-foot marks. Collapses and extends to 13 feet. Lock the upper section securely — an unlocked section can slip and give a false reading.
Direct Elevation Rod (DE Rod)
Set once to read the benchmark elevation directly. Every subsequent shot shows the actual point elevation without calculation. Faster for many grade points, but a wrong initial setting makes every reading wrong for the day.
Fiberglass Grade Rod
Single-section rod for laser level receivers and machine control. The receiver clamps at any height on the rod. Most fiberglass rods graduate in decimal feet on one face and metric on the other.
How to Read a Philadelphia Rod
- Find the whole-foot mark. Identify the large red numeral closest to and below the instrument crosshair. That is your whole-foot value.
- Count tenths. Each black or white band from the red numeral to the crosshair is 0.10 ft. Counting one band wrong by one is the most common error.
- Read hundredths. Graduation lines within each 0.10-ft band are 0.01 ft apart. Read where the crosshair bisects the rod.
- Record as X.XX ft. Example: 4.67, not "4 feet 8 inches" and not just "67."
- Verify. Look away and re-read. If you get the same number twice, record it.
Decimal Feet vs Feet and Inches
Grade rods use decimal feet. Tape measures and lumber use fractions of an inch. These do not convert intuitively:

Keep all field notes in decimal feet — that is what calculators and instruments expect.
Reading at Distance: Accuracy Tips
- Rod level: A leaning rod reads high. Use a circular bubble level. At 300 ft, a 1-degree lean produces a 0.05-ft error.
- Waving technique: The rodperson tips the rod top slowly toward and away from the instrument. The minimum reading seen is the correct vertical reading.
- Stadia check: Average of upper and lower stadia hair readings should equal the main crosshair reading. If not, the rod is probably leaning.
Common Errors
- Whole-foot transposition: Reading 3.67 as 4.67 because the "4" is just at the top of the view. Always confirm which whole-foot you are in.
- Unlocked extension: Upper section of a Philadelphia rod that is not locked can slip during a shot. Lock every extension.
- Mud on graduations: Wipe the rod face before entering the benchmark area.
