To set grade with a rotating laser level: (1) set up the instrument on stable ground; (2) shoot the benchmark with a grade rod to calculate the Height of Instrument (HI = benchmark elevation + rod reading); (3) calculate the target rod reading for each design elevation (target = HI − design elevation); (4) move to each grade point, set the receiver to the target reading, and read the on-grade signal. If the receiver shows CUT, the ground is high; if FILL, the ground is low.
Equipment You Need
- Rotating laser level (Topcon RL-H5A, Leica Rugby 680, Spectra HV302G) — projects a horizontal laser plane 360°
- Laser receiver (Topcon LS-80L, Leica Rod Eye) — clips to the grade rod and detects the laser beam
- Grade rod (fiberglass or Philadelphia rod, 8–16 ft) — graduated in decimal feet
Step 1: Set Up and Calculate HI
Place the instrument at a stable, central location on a tripod. Power on and wait for the self-leveling indicator (green LED). Hold the rod on your benchmark. The receiver will beep when it hits the laser plane. Read the rod at the receiver centerline mark.
Rod reading at on-grade signal: 4.92 ft
HI = 102.45 + 4.92 = 107.37 ft
Step 2: Calculate Target Rod Readings
HI = 107.37 ft
Design subgrade elevation: 105.50 ft
Target rod = 107.37 − 105.50 = 1.87 ft
Set the receiver on the rod to 1.87 ft. When the receiver shows on-grade, the bottom of the rod is at 105.50 ft.
Compute target rod readings for all your design elevations before heading to the field. Write them in your field book with the point description next to each.
Step 3: Check Grade at Each Point
Move to each grade check point. The receiver’s LEDs tell you:
- Center (green or on-grade beep): Ground is at design elevation.
- Upper LEDs (CUT): Ground is above design — material must be removed.
- Lower LEDs (FILL): Ground is below design — material must be added.
Switch the receiver to fine sensitivity for final grade checks. Coarse sensitivity allows ±1/2 inch of error; fine sensitivity is ±1/8 inch. Always verify final subgrade at fine sensitivity.
Re-Verifying the HI During the Day
Temperature changes and instrument vibration can shift the HI. Re-shoot the benchmark and recalculate HI every 2–3 hours, or any time you suspect the instrument moved. A 0.05-ft HI shift makes every subsequent grade check 0.05 ft wrong until corrected.
Receiver Settings for Machine Control
When the receiver is mounted on a dozer or grader blade for machine control, the hydraulic system automatically holds the blade at on-grade. Verify the initial bench cut on a known point before starting automated grading, and re-verify the bench cut every time the laser is repositioned.
