To export data from Topcon MAGNET Field for use in as-built documentation: open the job in MAGNET Field → Menu → Data → Export → select CSV or TXT format → choose the point list to export. For as-built work, export all measured points with point IDs, coordinates, and elevations. Transfer via USB to your computer or share directly from the MAGNET app.
Export File Formats
MAGNET Field supports several export formats. For use with Gradelog and standard spreadsheet import:
- CSV (comma-separated values): Best general-purpose format. Compatible with Excel, Gradelog, and most CAD import functions. Choose PNEZD (Point, Northing, Easting, Elevation, Description) order.
- TXT: Space or tab-delimited. Useful when CSV import has issues with comma-delimited columns.
- DXF: CAD format for importing directly to AutoCAD or Civil 3D for as-built drafting.
- MAGNET .job file: Proprietary format; only compatible with MAGNET software but preserves all observation data.
Step-by-Step Export Procedure
- Open the job in MAGNET Field on the data collector.
- Navigate to Menu → Data → Export (or Job → Export depending on MAGNET version).
- Select the export format (CSV recommended).
- Select which points to export: all points, or a selected range. For as-built work, export all measured points.
- Choose the column order: PNEZD is the most compatible with downstream software.
- Save the export file to the device’s internal storage or SD card.
- Transfer the file to your computer via USB data cable, email the file from the device, or use MAGNET Office cloud sync if configured.
Importing into Gradelog
From the job dashboard in Gradelog, navigate to Import → CSV Shot Log. Map the CSV columns to Gradelog’s fields (point ID, northing, easting, elevation). If your CSV has a design elevation column, you can import design elevations alongside measured elevations to auto-populate the deviation and pass/fail fields. Review the imported points before generating the as-built report.
Common Export Issues
- Wrong coordinate order: MAGNET can export in NE or EN order. Check that northing and easting are in the expected columns before importing.
- Elevation is ellipsoidal, not orthometric: If MAGNET was configured with a geoid model, elevations are orthometric (MSL-based). If not, they may be ellipsoidal. Verify the datum before importing elevation data.
- Decimal separator: In some locales, MAGNET uses commas as decimal separators instead of periods. This breaks CSV import. Change the MAGNET regional setting to use periods for decimals before exporting.
