A stringline is a taut line set between grade stakes or pins at a known offset and elevation, used as a visual and physical reference for checking grade, alignment, and curb or pipe placement. Crews measure down from the line with a grade rod or tape to verify subgrade and trench depths. Stringline is also the traditional reference system for curb machines and slipform pavers, where sensors ride the line to control elevation and steering.
