A borrow pit is an off-site or on-site excavation area used as a source of fill material when a project does not generate enough suitable cut to balance. Borrow material must meet the project specification for gradation, plasticity, and compaction, and borrow quantities are typically measured by survey of the pit before and after excavation. The opposite condition — excess cut — requires a waste or spoil site.
